When I grow up...

So, as you can tell, Candyland has had a rough week, to say the least. But today is a new day and after a conversation with the offspring, I'm determined to perk the eff up. When I was little, I wanted to be a rock star, a veterinarian, a Mommy. But when I asked my baby what she wanted to be, she said a spider with hope bursting from her eyes.

I couldn't squash that.

So I told her she'd be the best spider ever if she works hard at it. It made me realize how simple it all really is. Sure, she may never actually be a spider (I hope), but my dream doesn't seem nearly as difficult to obtain now that I know what she's after (a close second, though).

So tell me, friends, when you were little, what did you LONG to be? Are you even close to living that dream now or did it change with time?

I wanted to be a ballerina! The closest I am to that is taking my daughter to her very own dance lessons. Now I'm off to deal with a room full of Christmas ready eight year olds! Wish me luck!

Is the offspring's favorite book Charlotte's Web, by any chance? :)

Did she say why she wanted to be a spider? Does she want to crawl up walls? Swing from a web? Or maybe she wants to bite people she doesn't like and trap them in her web?

Too cute, whatever the reason!

I wanted to be (in no particular order) President, a teacher, a professional roller skater, and a writer.

I always said "artist". Think I got there all right.

Okay for a very long time I wanted to be an accountant just like my daddy.
Tell her good luck with the spidey thing we will be cheering her from the sidelines.

I love Lil's imagination. I think spider is a fine occupational choice! =)

I never could make up my mind when I was a child - I wanted to be an astronaut, a painter, a real estate agent, a teacher, a homemaker, a baker, an actor, a dancer.... I think that's why I love writing so much - I can be all those things through my characters. =)

Glad you're feeling better. <3

I wanted to be a brain surgeon until I realized I don't like the idea of cutting people open. Or listening to sick people complain.

My daughter wanted to be a doctor, too, until she realized she gets nauseous at the sight of blood. Now she wants to do cartoon voice overs.

Glad you're perking up some. Seems like an epidemic sweeping the blogosphere. I'm just yanking myself up by my bootstraps, too. It's been a brutal few months, let me tell you.

Imaginary spiders are probably better than real ones anyway. What a nice mom you are.

Wow. When I was about 7-ish, I wanted to be a genie.

Not just any genie. But Jeannie, as in Barbara Eden. I Dream of Jeannie premiered before I was born. By the time I was 7 or 8, it was showing in reruns on a local channel right before my bedtime. I used to go to sleep pretending I was Jeannie so I could do magic and be pretty.

i wanted to be a vet and a singer. My parents used to tease me and say i would sing to all the sick animals. I can still sing, and i made it all the way to college with my vet aspirations, but then that changed.

Maybe I'm really Sarah (Falen)? I wanted to be a vet and a singer. Oh, also a taxi cab driver.

ready for a snore? A writer. Seriously. That's it. But the truth is this: as a child I never believed I could *be* a writer. I thought I had to be all these other things instead b/c "pfft. Nobody's just a writer." hmmm....

But I love your daughter wanting to be a spider. Mine says she's a cat. Like it's already happened. :o) <3

I don't have any recollections of what I wanted to be growing up. Maybe that's good, I am not sure. Now I want to be the best version of me that I can be.

I wanted to have the same life as my parents. I loved childhood. Like seriously loved it. One of those kids with rose colored glasses I guess. Wanted to be a teacher like my mom. Have a husband and three little girls like our family (it was just me and my two sisters until I was 15) I distinctly remember wanting to be french. I used to tell people I was born in france and sing 'allouette'. SO I guess when I look at it that way, I've pretty much met my childhood expectations:)lol.

You just affirmed that my step daughter IS normal. She wants to be a ladybug. She's, er, 14. Maybe not SO normal? Meh - I wanted to be a writer. I suppose I should have said "paid" writer when the genie came around soliciting wishes.

That is too adorable.

When I was a kid, it was either ballet dancer or archaeologist.

I guess writer is kind of close . . .

All I ever wanted to be was a teacher. I have a lot of dramatic, emotional reasons for that, but I did what I set out to do. And I love it (most of the time). :-)

4th grade, I decided I wanted to be a teacher. And then I went & had some kids. One day I realized I had achieved my goal because as a parent I teach every single day. Of course, this doesn't mean they listen. But hey, planting the seeds is half the battle.
And, your daughter's spider dream is totally cool & an homage to the creativity you inspire in her. Hats off to you.

Oh, how cute! A spider. Precious. I hope she does not become a spider, just that she gets to drive one.

I wanted to be a teacher. Dream: fulfilled.

The only thing I ever remember wanting to do was write. i was in 5th grade when I finally decided in order to write I had to be an author, and ever since then I have pursued that. Sometimes it takes a break though, but really I have not once shied away from it. Where am I know with it? Published. Only small markets, but I'm published poet and short story writer.

So precious!

I wanted to be an author. And an artist. And a model. And actress. And singer. And a paleontologist. And a mommy.

Writing books was a given. I've been making stapled-together books since toddlerhood. But I was already DOING that, so it didn't count when people asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

First, I wanted to be an astronaut. My parents sadly shook their heads. I said, "Why not? Because I'm a girl?" They said, "Oh, no! Women make great astronauts! ...It's because you wear glasses."

Strike one. My second and third choices, no joke, were "truck driver" and "tropical fruit picker." I think I saw a monkey climbing a coconut tree in a book and thought that looked fun.

I love it. That shows true imagination! I don't think I ever considered wanting to be another species when I was a kid, but I should have wanted to be a cat. What a life.

I wanted to be a vet, but when my Mom reminded me that I'd have to put animals to sleep, I checked that off my list. Oh well.

OMG, Patty Blount! I DID grow up to be her. Haha!

It changed some, but I still wanted to work in design.
And author wasn't in my scopes at the time, either!

Maybe she can grow up and write about turning into a spider. She will be the next Kafka!

I wanted to be a lawyer!! LOL Never made that dream but other better ones came along and still do!

Colene Murphy said...

WAAHAHAHA! A spider!?! That is awesome. Coolest kid ever. The little girl at work was drawing spiders for me yesterday. What is with that?

No, you can so do it. It is a totally realistic, doable, achievable, plausible, attainable, ran out of words that just mean YOU CAN DO IT!

My mom told me when I was 3, I wanted to drive the garbage truck. Alas, my dream did not come true. My 5 year old wants to teach gymnastics, and I'm pretty sure she's been telling me that since she was 3 (she's been in gymnastics since she was 2). Much higher goals than I had at that age.

A spider! I love it. Who wouldn't want to be a spider.

I wanted to be an Olympic gymnast, Little Orphan Annie with curly red hair, a runaway who lived in a hut in the forest... and the list goes on.
