In which my four-year-old watches Waldo get freaky

My hands are still not in the best shape but I've had a stern talking to with them and decided their punishment will be one of those brace thingys. Yesyes. Other than that, a thank you to the recent donations to J2W.  You all are superawesomewonderful.

But I digress. because I have something WAY more important to discuss. I'm in complete opposition of the banning of any book, censorship or a person's right to free speech. HOWEVER, after buying the offspring one Where's Waldo book, we sprung for another because she whizzed through that thing in like a day.

Now, friends, is it just me or has Waldo gotten a bit...freakydeaky in the years since I last saw him? Why the hell is he in this place and what the eff are these kind of people into?

The hubs thinks I'm overreacting and that this is a completely normal thing to see in a FOUR-YEAR-OLD'S BOOK. It reminded me of something I saw on Anne's blog.
So, tell me friends, Team Hubs or Team CL here?

Ahahaha Waldo! Who invited you to *that* party? I know, the invitation was probably meant for Odlaw. (that was the name of his evil version, right?)

That does look like an S&M party, or maybe just a normal night at Swinging Richard's. Why would that be inappropriate for young children?

Team Suckhole for me.

I remember Anne's post and you're right, this is exactly the same thing!

I both laughed and was disgusted by Matt's comment. Definitely S&M and so not digging it for a four year old.

Though I did love playing along and glad to see I found Waldo ;)

I was too disturbed to find Waldo. Definitely team CL.

That is one freaky party!
I do believe that the freakiness will go over the child's head though. It may just look spooky Halloweenish to them. (My oldest would have loved it as a three year old, we'd take him to graveyards for fun...Not kidding, he loved everything Halloween). So even though it's probably inappropriate, I'm going with the hubs on this one. But don't think I'm going to be throwing any of these kinds of parties! :) I did find Waldo and he looks a little too happy to be in that bizarre situation.

I found him! I FOUND HIM! Top picture. Lower right corner. SCORE! Okay, now I can go back, and scan over the inappropriatness of Waldo's orgy fest... okay, its not that bad, but what will it be in ten more years? And where the heck are all the striped shirts? I thought that was the point of trying to find Waldo? Holy crap!

I agree with you Can what the eff is going on? For kids, I think not. Matthew can do what ever he wants he is an adult (sorry Matthem, I am only kidding) but I think a four year old definitely needs some guidence. Good luck on this one.

eh, i'm team hubs on this one. ONLY because even if it was an S&M party, no kid would ever pick up on that.

Um... Team CL. Definitely. I looked at those pictures and was like, what the hell??? Why can't we find Waldo at a baseball game?

Team Hubs! So funny you posted about this today because I just tweeted yesterday how the Where's Waldo books I ordered for my nephews arrived! And I'm asking Santa for the Where's Waldo calendar, heehee!

I remember those pics from when I was little and it hasn't scarred me or anything. I was too determined to find Waldo! I thought it was Halloween. Now I know it's medieval torture, which kids learn all about in history class anyway.

Ha ha! Oh, Waldo, you are hanging with the wrong crowd. I'm team CL on this one. the good news is that a 4 year old probably doesn't get it. :-)

paranormalcy has invaded Waldo! Actually, kids don't know about the same things/think like us grownups, so she's probably 100 percent unaffected. Still... :D

What the *(@%_! !&*? (fill in your choice of colorful descriptive exclamations there)

With you all the way on this one. Freaks me way the heck out. And they made a controversy over that Elmo they said was saying bad words years back...I think this is much worse!

Kids are pretty jaded these days (as they said in Monster's Inc. the 'scare window' is shrinking) but still, over the top for kids IMO. Over the top for me and I'm almost 40 *laugh*. I'm such a Twinkie in a biscotti world.

Whoa! That is crazy! I'm disturbed. What does that do to a four-year-old?

Colene Murphy said...

I'm going to say both. Okay, not both exactly. But I think it is freaky and creepy and gross.

BUT I don't think a little kid would see it the same way. I mean, I go back and look at books I loved, watch shows that were on and see movies again that I liked as a kid and am usually shocked by what I missed or didn't understand then.

But...I do agree that Waldo has indeed gotten into something dark and icky for his age...And I do wonder about the adults that saw this as appropriate for children...

I think parents should limit their kids to "age appropriate" books, if only so the kids have the pleasure of sneaking a peek at stuff they think they're not old enough for yet. Oh, how I loved doing that when I was a kid. ;)

Elana Johnson said...

Um, dude, I'm with you. Totally not completely normal.

(Now go jump off a cliff. Ha ha ha!)

it will go over her head but then kids hang on to memories sometimes

Whoa. Waldo has gone all torture-y. Scary. I think it's good to pre-read books my kids are interested it. Plus It's kind of fun.

HAHA, from what I remember, Waldo's always been kinda freaky hasn't he? But this one takes the cake. My daughter would be like, what are they doing? I would say, pretending. Like Lady Gaga does with all the blood when she performes (she loves Lady Gaga). It's all good.

I have no idea what on Earth Waldo is doing there. Team Candyland, all the way.

I'm seeing more vampires & their bloody drinks than I am in an episode of True Blood.

My opinion is that it's way too intense for such young people even tho' it's clearly a cartoon.

But thanks to Jared Larson for pointing out Waldo's location!
